Microsoft may unveil selfie phone on September 4

NEW DELHI: Microsoft's anticipated 'selfie' Lumia phone could be unveiled as soon as September 4.

The Redmond giant has started sending invites to the media for an event at the IFA, Berlin. The invite teases a camera-centric phone with the lead message, 'ready for more' featuring a rear camera lens assembly. The message further hints at a selfie phone as it asks the media to join Microsoft 'for more face time.'

While it's easy to get the term mixed up with FaceTime, the video (and audio) calling service offered by Apple for its users, it strongly hints at a front facing camera being the headline feature of the phone.
The invite follows a recent leak featuring Microsoft's suspected selfie phone - Lumia 730. In line with the recent trend of high-end front-facing shooters, the said phone is expected to sport a 5MP front-facing camera. The phone is said to feature a 4.7-inch display. The phone looked similar to Lumia 720. However, the rear camera of the phone doesn't resemble the lens assembly teased in the invite.

A recent report stated that Microsoft devices chief Stephen Elop had demonstrated two new Windows Phone 8.1 devices during an internal employee meeting. One of them was the 'selfie' phone codenamed 'Superman,' while the other one was codenamed 'Tesla' and could be Lumia 830.

Interestingly, the lens assembly teased in the invite resembles that of the alleged Lumia 830 phone leaked earlier. The leaked pictures suggested a polycarbonate body.

It's hard to say if the company will launch two phones or just one. As with all leaks, one can never be sure till the company makes the devices official.
