Good news for Microsoft: China wants to dump Windows

If China makes good on its threat to break up with Windows, Microsoft could lose the battle -- yet win the war

My niece has been staring at the TV with glazed eyes, stunned by the news that Hello Kitty is -- wait for it -- not a cat. No, really. According to the schizophrenics who invented Hello Kitty, she's an anime character (that is, a child) who loves cats and has one of her own. Why does she look like a cat? Because that's how the anime 'verse rolls, and apparently, her anime parents ignored their amnio results. That's not the only news from the Far East, although in my opinion, it's by far the most mind-blowing.
The other bit of news from Asia comes out of China and is a rehash of the threat/promise/drunken joke made every few years that the Chinese government is releasing its own operating system and plans to ban Windows from every nook and cranny because Microsoft is too powerful, monopolistic, and oppressive. Sure, why not? The Chinese government is also worried that Windows has been made deliberately vulnerable to NSA spying, which is evil and wrong, and China's higher-ups would never think about doing in their own country.

I agree. It is evil. It is wrong. Also, the Chinese would never think about doing it in their country. They simply do it.
News sources report that the new OS will be based on Ubuntu or at least a flavor of open source Linux, so I wonder how they figure it's not full of holes. Then again, who cares?
Stop me if you think you've heard this one before
Looking back, China has been making this promise every few years since the late '90s and even released a few lackluster examples, most recently COS, a mobile OS that flopped out this past January. The Chinese government claims it's not based on open source code, but somehow it's compatible with most of the Android app library and looks suspiciously like a skin of HTC's Sense environment. One Western developer said the name should stand for "Copy Other System." Further reports show that COS is doing really well in China -- if your definition of "well" is adoption at gunpoint.
But look at it from China's perspective -- there's little downside. The development costs are probably a pittance they've forced down the throat of an in-country programming house. It doesn't matter what the OS is based on as long as it meets the following criteria:
  • It's not Microsoft.
  • It's not open to international scrutiny.
  • It's chock-full of digital surveillance vulnerabilities, aka "features," as they're known in the Forbidden City (and, to be fair, in Washington, DC).
The few Chinese citizens who actually use this platform and don't buy it to stay in their government's good graces while operating another OS when no one's watching, those schmucks are extracompromised. That's gravy. The real upside is that the OS will pressure Microsoft and other software makers to grant the Chinese price concessions -- or else!
Microsoft shrugs
In response, Microsoft is probably saying, "Or else what?" Get a Microsoft number cruncher a little drunk and he'll tell you flat out that China is one of the planet's leaders in Windows software piracy, second only to Latin America. Chinese hackers steal Windows, Office, and other packages; crack them; and make them available on China-net in massive numbers. At the same time, big Chinese businesses and government make huge sales deals with Western developers, take delivery, then never pay up.
It makes you think that the big, new Microsoft office in Shanghai might be less about new software sales and more about getting their due. Then again, Microsoft sales must be desperate to move Windows 8, even to people who might not pay for it.
Regardless, the new operating system news wilts further when you learn that China, especially the government, is still galumphing along on more than a half-billion Windows XP machines. I sure hope they ported all that app code before they deploy their Ubuntu clone. Otherwise, they'll wind up mired in Wine or owing Crossover a fortune.
Add it all up, and I doubt Satya is losing sleep over a hastily slapped-together OS based on a low-penetration Linux desktop that can't run the apps China needs it to run unless it relies on homegrown black magic or a third party. It's not exactly a game changer. If China wants to pressure Western software companies, it'd do better to stick to trade negotiations than pulling lame PR stunts -- and paying its bills every once in a while.

Google Glass app detects human emotions in real time

German scientists have developed a software for Google Glass to measure human emotions by analysing their facial expressions, in addition to gauging a person's age and detecting gender.
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits adapted its SHORE real-time face detection and analysis software to work with Google Glass, the first app of its kind.
With the aid of Glass' integrated camera, the app detects people's faces and determines their emotions by analysing their facial expressions.
The so-called Glassware ( Google Glass app) simultaneously gauges the person's age or detects their gender among other things, but it cannot determine their identity, researchers said.
All calculations are performed in real-time by the CPU integrated in the eye-wear. The image data never leaves the device.
The advance opens up an entire spectrum of new smart eye-wear applications, including communication aids for people with disorders such as autism, many of whom have difficulty interpreting emotions through facial expressions.
This missing information could be superimposed in the person's field of vision with data glasses.
Even the visually impaired can benefit from the new software by receiving supplementary audio information about people in their surroundings, researchers said.
By taking advantage of the additional capability to determine someone's gender or estimate their age, the software could be used in other applications such as interactive games or market research analyses.

IBM Offers Guidance on Enterprise Mobility

 IBM has released a new report that offers businesses guidance on how to advance enterprise mobility for their employees. The report is titled “The Individual Enterprise – How Mobility Redefines Business” and was developed by the IBM Institute for Business Value. It illustrates how analytics-driven mobile strategies can redefine business and how work gets done, the company said. While many organizations recognize the potential impact of mobile, few have the foundation in place to capitalize on the power of mobile and data analytics. “Currently most enterprise mobile use has been restricted to email, calendaring and instant messaging,” said Saul Berman, vice president and chief strategist in IBM Global Business Services, in a statement. “Consider how combining mobile devices and cognitive analytics can completely transform how we work, industries operate and companies perform. Getting started with this new imperative requires leaders who can define what this journey will look like and champion a call to action.” 

The report showed that 84 percent of CIOs rate mobile solutions as a critical investment to get closer to customers and 94 percent of CMOs ranked mobile apps as crucial to their digital marketing plans. While the C-suite is considering mobile applications that are customer facing, the greater opportunity exists in the enterprise to impact the way people work, collaborate and innovate.

A successful mobile initiative will enable employees to access relevant information and insights when and where needed, as well as create fundamental new value, weigh outcomes using analytics and data streams, and focus on leading edge features of the latest mobile devices.
According to the research, evolving to a mobile enterprise requires a solid foundation with fundamental components including security, connectivity, resiliency, orchestration, and insights and learning. A successful mobile enterprise should employ centralized device management and security to overcome the fragmented device platforms resulting from existing “bring-your-own-device” (BYOD) programs. The enterprise also should minimize platform complexities introduced with "always-on" mobile networks in conjunction with flexible architectures that can easily incorporate changing components.
In addition, the IBM study said a successful mobile enterprise should adopt interchangeable solutions to create efficiencies and enable both organizations and individuals to quickly combine and recombine different applications and data streams based on actual circumstances. It also must use analytics to grow more responsive and learn on the fly, ultimately enabling predicative and prescriptive recommendations that further inform decision making.
Once the foundation for enterprise mobility has been laid, the report outlines five steps to progress the strategy including the development of “journey maps” that depict user interactions, IBM said. These steps are live experiments that can be improved and expanded upon based on employee experiences.
IBM has more than 5,000 mobile experts and has secured more than 4,300 patents in mobile, social and security technologies that have been incorporated into IBM MobileFirst solutions. Through IBM's partnership with Apple, the two organizations are transforming enterprise mobility with a new class of industry-specific business apps, IBM said.
IBM also boasts a deep portfolio of big data and analytics consulting and technology expertise based on experiences drawn from more than 40,000 data and analytics client engagements. This analytics portfolio spans research and development, solutions, software and hardware, and includes more than 15,000 analytics consultants, 4,000 analytics patents, 6,000 industry solution business partners, and 400 IBM mathematicians, IBM said.

Micromax beats Apple for No. 2 spot in tablet sales in India

Micromax has overtaken Apple to reach the number two spot in the tablet market in India, with 14% marketshare in the second quarter as the market is still trying to recover. 

As per IDC, strong performance in Q2 allowed Micromax to beat Apple to the second spot. With 9% market share, Apple stood at the third spot. More than 60% of the overall iPad volume is being supported by their iPad mini. 

Samsung on the other hand, continued to lead the pack with 19% marketshare.Majority of its volume is driven by sub Rs 12,000 voice calling Tablets. The overall India tablet market declined 34% in the second quarter over last year but analysts see early signs of recovery after the market took a sharp hit in the past couple of quarters. Tablet market shipments in India stood at 8.6 lakh units in Q2, growing 9% over the previous quarter. It stood at 13.1 lakh units a year ago 

"This recovery was fuelled by multiple factors. Business sentiments have shown improvement post elections and near term prospects are anticipated to remain better too. Further, traditional PC OEMs have started making big inroads in the tablet market and most of this success is led by leveraging their vast expanded reach through multiple distribution points," says Karan Thakkar, Senior Market Analyst, IDC India. 

Android continues to be the most preferred Operating system. With 89.6% market share Android is expected to sailBSE 0.06 % above 80% mark over the next few years. Windows OS is gaining ground too. However, much of these volumes are currently being driven by the spurt in enterprise buying. 

Tablets with screen size 7 and 8 inch contributed to 88% of the overall market in Q2 CY2014. IDC expects dominance of the aforementioned screen size to continue. However on the low volume side, tablets with screen size 10 and 11inch grew by 54% in Q2 CY2014.

"The combined share of PC OEMs in the India tablet market is expected to beat industry growth in the coming quarters," adds Thakkar. 

Accenture to provide IT solutions to Bharti Retail

IT firm Accenture today said it will implement SAP solutions for Bharti Retail to enable the firm to more efficiently plan, monitor and track flow of merchandise and information throughout its supply chain. No financial details were disclosed. 

Bharti Retail currently operates 212 stores and compact hypermarket formats across 11 Indian states. 

By rolling out SAP ERP application and data management software, along with solutions for merchandising, forecasting, promotion management and fulfilment, Bharti Retail will be able to better react to shifting retail trends, Accenture said in a statement. 

"The retail industry today is facing challenges of poor consumer sentiments, supply chain inefficiencies and rising costs. Accenture will help us strengthen efficiency of our business operations and support our efforts to rapidly scale up our business," Bharti Retail MD and CEO Raj Jain said. 

Accenture will also implement advanced analytics, planning and financial solutions from SAP to help improve speed of reporting across the organisation. 

"Using advanced analytics and implementing a central planning platform will provide Bharti Retail the insights, flexibility and transparency it needs in its IT operations and supply chain, thereby helping the company to streamline its operations expenditure and improve its profitability," Accenture India CMD Avinash Vashistha said. 

Just out of school teens turn entrepreneurs

Image Call them India’s Restless Teenage Inc. Some are still in high school, some barely out of it, and they are into fascinating ventures — a transaction platform for bitcoins, applications for Google Glass, and more. They are even mentoring older entrepreneurs on technology and business.
Take Kshitij Kumar, 18, who has just finished class 12 from Khaitan Public School in Delhi, and is heading to the University of Illinois for a degree in business and computer science. He started a magic tricks tutorial portal called Horizonmagic.com when he was 10. Four years ago, he started a software firm called Blix that created products, including Snappy, that allows users to covert pictures into any format, and Mathomatic, a free math problem solving tool.
Now he’s working on developing an app called Getcaption.io for Google Glass. “If you are talking to someone whose language you do not understand, the app will show you, on the glass, the translation of what is being said in a language that you understand – like subtitles in a movie,” Kumar says. It’s still work in progress, and currently offers translated subtitles only in English. The app can also take pictures of, say, each of three people in a conversation, and lay out the entire conversation in a Whatsapp-like format.Barely out of school, teens turn tech entrepreneurs
Joel John, 19, has just joined Symbiosis University in Pune for a Bachelor’s in business administration. People call him a bitcoins guru. “There’s nothing that he does not know about bitcoins,” says Brij Bhasin of GSF, a startup accelerator and investor that has a programme called High School Geeks that not only helps children like John and Kumar to build their businesses, but also uses them to educate their older entrepreneur members.
Barely out of school, teens turn tech entrepreneurs
When John was 15, he started a server rental business for gamers, and then another that allowed people who took surveys to, say, read a book for free online. “In these stints, I developed an interest in payment processing. I began to research the area, and delved into bitcoins. I thought that with bitcoins, one could bring down remittance charges to a fraction of what money transfer companies charge. It would even allow, say a farmer in Mizoram with no registered business and no bank account, to do business with someone in the US,” John says. Alongside his Symbiosis course, John is now busy building a bitcoin transaction platform that he hopes the world will do business on one day.
Even about a decade ago, kids with such accomplishments in business were a rarity. In 2000, Suhas Gopinath, then 16, established a web design company in Bangalore and was celebrated as the world’s youngest CEO. But there was just the one Suhas Gopinath. Today you see them all over, thanks to the encouragement by parents, schools, the bustling startup environment, and technology platforms that allow for easy discoverability of talent.
Sharad Sharma, co-founder of software product association iSpirt, narrates a story about a parent who was worried about his son’s performance at school, and wanted Sharma to guide him. “I reluctantly agreed and then I found that the kid, Raghav Sood, had already developed several Android apps, had written a book on building an augmented reality application that had been published by Springer (an international publisher of tech and science books). And I wondered if the parent was mocking me. Who was I to guide a kid like that!” he says.
Sharma attributes the phenomenon of early-age accomplishments partly to the mobile internet. “It is so enabling. You can do programming from anywhere. Also, these technologies have made discovering a Ramanujan so much easier. Ramanujan (the brilliant mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan who died in 1920) was recognized only because of a letter he sent to Hardy (English mathematician GH Hardy),” he says.
Organizations like GSF are also beginning to actively engage with this segment. “I got hands-on experience on how to scale a business and got access to GSF’s network of mentors,” says Gurgaon-based Gautam Gupta, who at 13 co-developed a social media sharing plugin called SexyBookmarks that was later acquired by Shareaholic. He has just finished school from Amity International and is heading to the University of Waterloo, Canada, for a course in software engineering.
Another GSF high-school geek is Anmol Maini, who built a robotic arm at school and now is envisioning movable walkways in cities that can obviate the need for cars. Microsoft has a student partner programme in India, and Pratik Mohapatra, 16, an 11th class student of National Public School, Bangalore, is its youngest partner. Mohapatra has developed multiple apps for Microsoft and Google, and has won several competitions, including one of Microsoft’s recently that entitles him to a trip to watch the US Formula 1 Grand Prix.
“These kids have a good sense of apps, technology, about how younger people use them. We learn as much from them as they learn from us,” says GSF’s Bhasin.

Whatsapp Bringing In The Much Awaited Free Call Feature?


If rumors are to be believed, the popular messaging service WhatsApp is all geared up to launch a free voice calling feature for the 600 million active users that it has. Though there isn't any official report that has come, there have been some changes in the interface that suggest the upcoming feature.

"The leaked images of the upcoming user interface show that the app has been enabled with other language translations which will be displayed at the time a person receives a call via WhatsApp," says a report on thefusejoplin.com.

Ever since Facebook has acquired WhatsApp, the messaging service has seen a 15% rise in its traffic. This would also be the perfect time for Facebook to add this feature in this app, because almost all the competitors of Whatsapp, like Line, Viber, and Hike, have this feature and this is not something that should hold the giant back from retaining the top spot in the market.
